- I received one of the first ST's in Orlando and can remember that all
- one could do was play with the desktop, as there was no software available.
- The ST manual was very thin (still is) and many functions had to be found by
- experimentation or comparing notes with others. Well, software is now
- available, but current hardware documentation leaves a lot to be desired.
-
- Over the past several months I've managed to learn a few things. Every
- once in a while someone points out something that makes things much easier,
- and I wonder why I didn't know that before. So, I decided to pass along some
- of these tips. I intend to update this file periodically, so I need your
- inputs. Leave a message on this BBS or call me at 678-8417.

- TIP # 1
- -------
- Perhaps you've moved the mouse pointer to a text file, double clicked,
- and used the "show" option to display it on screen. You know that using the
- Space Bar will advance the text one whole screen and the <Return> key will
- advance the text one line. When you come to "end of file", one more <Sp> or
- <Cr> will return you to the desk top. But, let's say you don't want to space
- all the way to the end to get back to the desktop; simple, just hit <Control>
- C, and instantly you're back to the desktop.
-
- TIP # 2
- -------
- When you remove a disk from the drive and replace it with another,
- instead of closing the window and then re-opening to display the new disk
- files, just hit the <Esc> key and the new disk directory will replace the
- previous one.
-
- TIP # 3
- -------
- The <Esc> key can also be used for a few other things;
-
- a. It will erase any field of the Gem Dialog Windows, ie. when renaming a file
- or folder, instead of backspacing over the old name, just hit <Esc> to
- erase it.
- b. When using the VT52 emulator, <Esc> E will clear the screen, <Esc> p
- enters reverse vidio, <Esc> q exits reverse vidio. I have compiled a
- complete list of <Esc> functions and will make it available at Rainbow
- Computer Center, or with enough requests, will upload it to this BBS.
-
- TIP # 4
- -------
- When moving one file, you simply move the pointer to that file, press
- and hold the left mouse button and "drag" the file to another window, to a
- folder, to one of the disk icons, or to the trash can. To move more than
- one file, move the pointer to the extreme left of the window and slightly
- above the top file in the group. Press and hold the left mouse button and
- "drag" a box around the group, release the button, move the pointer to one
- of the files,(now highlighted) and "drag" the whole group to the desired
- location. Now a new trick, suppose you want to move several files that are
- not grouped together. Hold the <Shift> key down and using the pointer,
- click on each file to highlight it. When all the files that you desire to
- move are highlighted, release the <Shift> key, move the pointer to one of
- the highlighted files and "drag" the entire group to the desired location.
-
- TIP # 5
- -------
- If you have a new program that won't run, crashes, locks up the machine,
- or does other weird things, before taking it back to the store, remove any
- additional desk accessories you may have added like "Breakout" , "Calendar",
- ect., and try again. Remember to re-boot after removing the accessories.
-
- TIP # 6
- -------
- To rename a desktop icon; for instance, to change "FLOPPY DISK" to "TOP
- DISK", move the pointer to the icon and click to highlight it. Go to the
- Options Menu and select "Install Disk Drive". Move the pointer to the drive
- name and click to move the cursor to that field. Backspace or use the <Esc>
- key (Remember TIP # 3a?) to erase the name and type in the new name. Move the
- pointer to the "Install" box and click on it. The icon is now renamed. If you
- want it to be permanent, use the "save desktop" function. The TRASH CAN icon
- may also be renamed (I'm sure you can think of something better) by loading
- the DESKTOP.INF file into a text editor. If ST Writer is used, make sure the
- margins are set to 0, and print to disk. Do not use "Save" as ST Writer uses
- a different format.
-
-
- That's it for this installation. The format that will be used in the
- continuation and future updates will be as follows:
-
- TIP # 7 from (name)
- ------------------
-
- So that you'll know if you have the latest; file names will be ST1.TXT,
- ST2.TXT, ST3.TXT, Ect.
-
- Give me your inputs, as I'm sure many will benefit.
